A GUARDIAN OF KLUNGKUNG PURI, BALI

High 90cm
Wide 36cm

If you want to enter a holy place in Bali, it's not uncommon for two spooky statues to greet you to the right and left of the gate.  These two statues generally have unique expressions, namely bulging eyes, long and sharp fangs, but accompanied by a faint smile.  And, one of his arms holds a weapon in the form of a mace.

The Hindu community in Bali is no stranger to the existence of these two statues.  They are both called Dwarapala, namely the figure of the gatekeeper.  His sinister expression holds the impression of firmness and a warning to anyone not to enter the intended place carelessly.  However, his smile still implied friendliness.  Each of these statues is named Nandiswara which is located on the right (left of the gate) and Mahakala which is located on the left (right of the gate).  The existence of both is associated with the power of Lord Shiva as one of the manifestations of God in Hinduism.
