BARONG RANDE MASK "THE SOMETHING DIFFERENT IN IT"

Barong is a mask in the form of a mythological animal that has supernatural powers and is a protector of the Balinese people. Judging from the iconography of the Barong masks in Bali, it appears that there is a blend of Hindu culture and ancient Balinese culture, especially Hindu Buddhist culture.

Such barong masks are also found in Buddhist countries, such as Japan and China. In the Asashi area, Iwate province, Japan, Si-shi masks and other animal masks are still performed for ritual ceremonies, especially the ceremony of asking for safety from the ancestors and the ceremony of sending down rain.

Performances are performed once a year in ceremonies at temples of ancestral worship. Dozens of animal masks were displayed and attended by thousands of Japanese people. Such Si-shi performances are accompanied by traditional Japanese music such as various types of large drums (daiko), small drums (kakko), flutes (hichiriki), wooden kepyak (sakobioshi), and sacred songs performed by community members.
