The development of Sobrat's painting is marked by changes in form, from
which resembles a puppet becomes a more real human figure. In
the painting Barong Landung Dance (1934) discussed in this book, Sobrat
blending the world of mythology, history, and everyday life. Work
prominent painted in the early days of his career depicts
stage performance of Barong Landung ("landung" means big) inside
people's party atmosphere. You can also feel the depth of space in this work. Stage
barong in Bali is usually a routine ritual expression
performed on holy days. In the Barong Landung Dance, which is sacred
inseparable from everyday life.
The male barong is painted in dark colors, pointing to the figure of the King
Shri Aji Jaya Pangus in the Ancient Bali period. While the female barong
who is pure white, slanted eyes, and sharp nose
depicts Kang Cing Wie, the Chinese princess of the Sung Dynasty,
the king's consort. Sobrat describes the relationship between Balinese people
and Chinese that have existed for a long time. This is an expression of acculturation or
a mixture of two cultures that is reflected in his paintings.
