Marapu is an indigenous religion of the Archipelago that is adhered to by the people on the island of Sumba and is also the name of an organization of adherents of the faith which was registered in 1982. More than half of the population of Sumba adheres to this belief. This religion has a belief in the worship of ancestors and ancestors. Followers of the Marapu religion believe that life in this world is only temporary and that after the end of time they will live eternally in the spirit world, namely in the Marapu heaven known as Prai Marapu.

Patau tana that comes from humans are the spirits of people who die unnaturally, for example due to accidents, suicides, murders and so on. Such spirits become evil out of curiosity or resentment and cannot escape their old lives. Residents give them offerings so as not to disturb
