Revealing the Meaning Behind the Borneo Baby Carrier

In Indonesian culture, it is very common for a mother to lull her baby to sleep by humming while rocking the baby in her arms so that the baby falls asleep.

In some Dayak tribes, baby carriers are seen as a valuable heirloom. What makes this carrier special are the objects that are attached to the basic structure of the baby carrier, namely on a wooden plank seat and its webbing, both of which can rot with age, while the objects that are linked can be moved to attach to the new baby carrier structure. So, do not be surprised if beads or other ancient objects are found attached to the structure of the new baby carrier. Objects attached to the baby carrier can vary, such as teeth (tiger, leopard or weasel), sea shells, coins, various types of beads. Baby carriers in some Dayak tribes use wood, without decorations such as teeth and beads.

Tribal baby carriers in Borneo are known for their lavish decoration, especially for their exquisite beadwork. This baby carrier is used by the Dayak tribes including the Dayak Apo Kayan (Kenyah, Kayan, Bahau), Dayak Kadazan (Dusun Kajang), Dayak Berawan, Dayak Punan, Dayak Penan, Dayak Kerayan. Structurally, the Dayak baby carrier is made from a soft wooden plank in the shape of a semicircle, which functions as a baby seat. On the wood there is a structure of woven that is installed upright. The sling is equipped with two shoulder straps. How to use a baby carrier is similar to using a backpack with the baby positioned on the back of the father or mother who is carrying him. On the outside of the woven, various decorative objects loaded with spiritual values are installed. These objects are all tied to a circular webbing. The motifs and objects that are widely used include the fangs of a tiger or leopard and the motif of a crouching person. Such motifs and objects are markers of social status and at the same time become powerful protective devices against spiritual threats.
